Events, Conventions, Conferences

Last year (2014-15) I traveled extensively. I appeared at conventions and spoke at  conferences. I taught workshops and mini-lessons. I held book signings. I loved it all.

This year (2015-16) I do not intend to hold any events, conventions or conferences unless I am invited to and the producer meets the following conditions: mileage is 50 cents per mile to and from my home, lodging is included if necessary; my autographed books will be sold sometime during the event; ample advertisement takes place for this event; and I am recompensed a speaker's fee as listed on my brochure.

I am not being snobby; I am being professional.

About Evelyn ~~

Five books in five years, plus an anthology.
I am definitely following my bliss.
I’ve been published in over a dozen magazines and newspapers.  I wrote a weekly column for veterans for BellaOnline for three years and now write the ScienceFiction/Fantasy Books column there. I am the owner of Denouement Literary Agency, LLC "Where Authors & Publishers Tie the Knot!" and am the Editor of two traditional small press publishing houses: BLISS Books (Building Life-long Inspirational and Successful Strategies) and Portals Publishing (The Best Books Are Portals to New Worlds). I figured that, if I can get 5 books published in 5 years by traditional small presses, it is my honor to help others do the same.

Over my three decades as an educator, I have taught elementary, middle, high, and adult schools and in alternative school sites like DJJ and Teen Pregnancy Centers.  I’m certified in Early Childhood, Elementary, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Middle School Integrated Curriculum, Gifted, and Journalism.  Right now, I am teaching Robotics and Spanish to the greatest kids in the world - at Jewett School of the Arts.

My home – Fern Cottage – is certified as a natural habitat by the National Wildlife Federation (which means it provides food, shelter, water, and breeding areas for wildlife and does not use fertilizers or pesticides) and is a haven to many endangered birds, lizards, and plants.  Currently, I am foster mother to over a thousand tadpoles (I can differentiate three separate kinds) and share my home with Daisy – my mostly yellow lab and Moonbeam – my mostly Siamese and their mini-panther Shadow and hunter extraordinaire Sterling and foundling Peek-a-boo (whom Sterling rescued).  My avocado tree is loaded this year and I share fresh pineapples with my friends. My tadpole ponds are not quite as busy this year, but I still am serenaded by thousands of the adult frogs each night.

People often ask me when I find  time to write as much as I do.  It's easy, I spend my time doing what's important to me; everything else takes a back-seat.   Most of my life, writing had to take the back-seat.  I wrote for decades with no thought of becoming published.  There were just too many other necessary responsibilities that took precedence before I could  do all it takes to market a manuscript.  But I never stopped writing.  Finally, there came a point in my life when I did have time to invest in the business-side of writing.  Four years of 'letters of declination' passed before BellaOnline hired me as the Veterans' columnist and another six months passed before Comfort Publishing bought my  first novel. For those of you who understand this: I believed. I received. And I am completely grateful!

My favorite authors: not in any certain order, but beginning with CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien and closely followed by Emma Curtis Hopkins, Robert Jordan, Louis L'Amour, Rachel Carson, Douglas Adams, and Scott Cunningham.  My research comes from many different areas, but a great deal of it comes from
A Modern Herbal by Mrs. M Grieve FRHS first published 1931 by Jonathan Cape Ltd. My favorite books come into my possession from tiny thrift stores and Goodwill and the Salvation Army. They often call out to me, "Buy me! You need to read me!!" And they are more often than not - RIGHT.

Spiritually, I follow the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.  I mention this because, as you read my  novels, you may wonder about my spiritual path.  I believe there is more grace than sin, more joy than sorrow, and more hope than despair.  I believe none of us are strangers to despair, but when given the choice between darkness and light, we should choose the light.  I believe we are placed on this earth to help each other, but we are just visiting here.  We are souls who during these brief years have a body. I understand that there are "Many Paths, One God."
